Van Gogh, The Starry Night, 1889
- Created a year before his death, after he had checked himself into St. Pauls Sanitarium in France; he had very high hopes to create an artist’s colony in the south of France where they could support each other, and share ideas/resources
- His good friend, Paul Gauguin, came to visit him and tried to help him, but they ended up fighting and Gauguin left, leaving Vincent’s dream crushed and spirals into a depression. After Gauguin left, Vincent cut off part of his earlobe, walked it to a brothel, and presented it to a prostitute he wanted to help. Of course, he was rejected since he had no money.
- This is a combination of the view from his window and the memories of his homeland; Dutch baroque landscapes usually featured the sky as 2/3rds of the composition, which Van Gogh seems to channel
- There was a contemporary theory that when you die, your soul goes into star; he could be thinking about death.
- In 1890, after being cared for by his doctor, he walked out into a field and shot himself. However, he shot incorrectly, and it took around three days for him to bleed to death.
